Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

The Seasons, Opus 37bis

           March: Song of the Lark, Andantino espressivo in G minor

June: Barcarolle, Andante cantabile in G minor

October: Autumn Song, Andante doloroso e molto cantabile in D minor

Composed in 1876, Tchaikovsky was commissioned these monthly pieces for a magazine, a source of income while he was finishing his first ballet Swan Lake.

Frédéric Chopin

Etude Black Keys, Opus 10 No. 5, Vivace in G Flat major

Etude La Tempête, Opus 10 No. 9, Allegro molto agitato in F minor

Nocturne No 20 Opus Posthume, Lento con gran espressione in C Sharp minor 

All three were composed in 1830. The nocturne was published 21 years after Chopin’s death.

INTERMISSION

Ludwig Van Beethoven

            Sonata 23, Opus 57 Appassionata in F minor, 1^st movement: Allegro assai 

Composed in 1804-1805, Beethoven is said to think highly of this sonata: one of his best.

Erik Satie 

First Gnossienne, Lento in D minor

Composed in 1890, this experimental music genre is Satie's own invention.

Astor Piazzolla

Oblivion, Lento con spirito, a tango in D minor

Composed in 1982, arranged for piano by Frank Marocco.
